Shopping and Second Game

Our second game wasn't until 9 pm so we spent the day shopping. On our daily walk to the Metro we pass by the local "corner shop". As with a lot of stores in Moscow, it doesn't have much of a "street presence" but it has a great selection from fish to fresh baked goods and regular convenience items.

To get to the Metro we have to go through an underpass. The small shops that occupy a piece of the wall are stuffed with a huge selection of items. We've seen bras, trinkets, clothes, electronics and flowers

This fellow had a stand in the market.
He knew all about Canadian hockey
and gave me a discount on a Russian
 cookbook because he liked Canadians

This "Disneyland"place is the market. It primarily had souvenirs
but there were a few good  quality items like leather goods and craft beer.

The 'high end' shopping is in the centre of town near the Kremlin.  It is the site of the former GUM department store.  Before this trip I had a vague impression that shopping would be boring, lacking style and limited. Instead all the usual Gucci, Armani and other unaffordable shops are here. There is a fondness for English chains like Mothercare but there is a lot of American influence in the sports wear and fast food chains.

Our second game was Brazil vs Serbia. It was a crucial game for both teams so the play was worth watching. The fans were just as interesting though.

  1. Great Blog - just the right amount of dialog, lots of photos (of beer)!
Not sure if that was wise for Laurie to hug that man vendor - the gulag is not a nice place!
Laurie, I suggest you stick with only hugging buxom metallic Russian lassies :-) Mike

    1. He had a great knowledge of Canadian hockey. We discussed the1994 Canucks run for the Stanley Cup, what a great player Pavel Bure is and what complete bastards the Boston Bruins were in 2011. It is also very clear that hockey in general is huge ad that everyone of a certain age remembers the 1972 Summit Series and Paul Henderson!
